Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on signing Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, as per Football Insider.
The Red Devils currently have Lisandro Martínez and Ayden Heaven as specialist options to deploy in the left centre-back position. Moreover, Harry Maguire can provide cover in this area if needed.
However, Maguire has reached the twilight of his career and his existing deal is set to expire at the end of this season. On the other hand, Heaven has displayed below-average performances this term but is still very young and needs time to develop.
Martínez, meanwhile, has struggled with numerous fitness problems over the last few years and has entered the final year of his current contract.
Moreover, he has recently criticised the club’s sporting director, Jason Wilcox, and picked up an unnecessary red card vs Chelsea last weekend. So, speculation surrounding his future has started emerging.
Now, Football Insider state that United are prepared to let Martínez leave next year and are considering purchasing a new centre-back in January.
After being impressed by Bassey’s recent promising performances for Fulham, Man Utd have identified him as a serious option, and he could be tempted to join, although Álvaro Arbeloa is keen on keeping hold of him.
Bassey to Man Utd
The report state that Bassey’s existing deal is set to run until next summer, with Fulham having an option to extend the deal for a year further. They are even prepared to trigger the contract extension.
Bassey, standing at 6ft 1in tall, is a left-footed centre-back but is also comfortable in the left-back position. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Although Fulham have endured a tough start this season, Bassey, valued at around £23m by Transfermarkt, has shown glimpses of his qualities, keeping three clean sheets in nine Premier League appearances.
The 26-year-old is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd should they purchase him.
