Dave Allen predicts Daniel Dubois vs Filip Hrgovic rematch: “It’s a bad style for him”

Having previously fought Filip Hrgovic and sparred Daniel Dubois, British heavyweight Dave Allen has considered how their potential rematch might unfold.

The pair delivered a thrilling battle in June 2024, with Hrgovic getting off to a strong start and Dubois gathering momentum as their fight progressed.

Then, in round eight, it was deemed unsafe for Hrgovic to continue after the Croatian’s cuts, which had appeared over both eyes, were assessed by the ringside doctor.

As a result, Dubois claimed an impressive stoppage victory and went on to score a fifth-round finish over Anthony Joshua, before losing by the same result against Oleksandr Usyk in his following outing.

Since then, however, ‘Dynamite’ has become a two-time world champion by surviving two knockdowns and scoring an 11th-round stoppage of Fabio Wardley.

Their rematch, meanwhile, was far more emphatic, as Dubois retained his WBO title with a second-round finish before going face-to-face with IBF champion Hrgovic.

In terms of a possible rematch and unification clash, then, heavyweight veteran Allen has taken to social media and shared his thoughts.

“I have to go Dubois. I don’t think [Hrgovic] has the power to win; I think it’s a bad style matchup for him.

“I think Dubois’ too relentless, and he will always overwhelm [Hrgovic] and, without the cuts, probably outpoint him. But the cuts are an issue for [Hrgovic] every time he boxes.”

Following his third-round finish over Allen earlier this year, Hrgovic pulled off a major upset by stopping Moses Itauma in nine rounds.

In doing so, he claimed the vacant IBF title in August and is now set to make a mandatory defence against fellow 34-year-old Frank Sanchez in early 2027.
