Arsenal have been strong defensively this season and their form at the back will certainly be crucial as Mikel Arteta looks to defend the Premier League, while also going one better in the Champions League after finishing second in 2025/26.
In William Saliba’s absence, Ezri Konsa has settled in rather quickly next to Gabriel Magalhaes in central defence after joining from Aston Villa. Despite the Englishman’s arrival, another purchase could be made in January after Piero Hincapie’s injury.
Christian Falk has reported that Arsenal are keen on signing Bayern Munich centre back Kim Min-jae during the January transfer window, and could leverage his contractual situation and secondary role at the Allianz Arena to sign him at a low price.
His contract with Bayern expires in June 2028 and discussions over a renewal are yet to take place, whereas playing second fiddle under Vincent Kompany means the Bundesliga side is open to selling him, having valued Min-jae at £21 million.
Min-jae a vital squad player for Arsenal
William Saliba’s return date from his injury is yet to be known, as is the extent of Piero Hincapie’s injury. However, Kim Min-jae’s signing from Bayern Munich will be a crucial one for Arsenal as his experience will be key in the second half of the campaign.
Formerly of Napoli, Min-jae is strong aerially and physically, covers ground with ease thanks to his pace and does well in a high defensive line. He is also composed on the ball, and his experience means the 29-year-old can hit the ground running quickly.
Should Saliba need time to regain his form and if Hincapie is out for a big chunk of the foreseeable future, Min-jae can step in during the domestic cups and busier phase of the season, which is when he will bring most utility instead of a young talent.
It will be interesting to see whether the South Korean international is prepared to join Arsenal, where everything points towards his role being very limited like it is at Bayern Munich, or if he prefers joining a club where he can play…..
