How Often Do Premier League Teams Come Back From Behind at Half-Time? What Historical Data Reveals

An analysis of 4,180 Premier League matches across 11 seasons, from 2015/16 to 2025/26

A three-goal deficit at the break can feel like the end of a football match. But just how unlikely is a Premier League comeback? An examination of 4,180 fixtures by Footiqo offers a clear answer: winning after trailing at half-time is rare, but some clubs are considerably better at it than others.

Across the 11 seasons studied, 2,527 matches had one team in front at the interval. The side that was behind went on to win only 218 times. That is a comeback victory rate of 8.6%, or roughly one success in every 12 opportunities.

Most half-time leaders ultimately held on. Of the 2,527 teams trailing at the break, 1,905 (75.4%) were beaten, 404 (16.0%) recovered a draw and 218 (8.6%) completed the turnaround to win. In other words, just under one in four avoided defeat, but an outright victory was much less common.

Figure 1. What happens to teams trailing at half-time?

When the home side was behind at half-time, it recovered to win 120 of 1,078 matches (11.1%). Away teams managed the same feat in 98 of 1,449 matches (6.8%). That is a gap of 4.4 percentage points in favour of home sides.

Home teams were also more likely to salvage at least a draw: 28.3% did so, compared with 21.9% of away teams. These are historical associations rather than proof that the venue alone causes a comeback. Opponent strength and the circumstances of each match also matter.

There is a sharp contrast between going into half-time one goal down and needing to overturn a two-goal gap. Teams behind by a single goal won 200 of 1,758 matches (11.4%). With a two-goal deficit, the comeback-win rate fell to 17 out of 594 (2.9%).

Only one team in the entire sample won after being three or more goals behind at half-time. Across 175 such matches, that amounts to 0.6%.
