Manchester United are reportedly continuing conversations over a deal to sign SC Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic, as per TEAMtalk.
After moving to Europa-Park-Stadion from Eintracht Frankfurt, the 23-year-old enjoyed a promising debut campaign last term, scoring 15 goals and registering four assists across all competitions. The Croatian even helped his side reach the Europa League final before losing to Aston Villa.
This season, Matanovic has had a stellar start, scoring five goals and registering two assists in five appearances across all competitions. He has helped his side place themselves third in the Bundesliga.
Having proven his worth in the German top-flight, the youngster has secured his place in the Croatian national team.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that Man Utd have been attracted by Matanovic’s recent developments and previously held talks to sign him as a backup striker option. They have continued to hold internal discussions over a potential swoop.
With Matanovic’s contract set to run until 2029, Freiburg aren’t in any rush to sell him and want around £50m if they are forced to part ways with him.
The report state that apart from United, Aston Villa, Coventry City, Fulham, Arsenal, and Chelsea have all been keeping a close eye on his development before making a potential move.
Matanovic to Man Utd
Man Utd currently have Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee as specialist striker options. Moreover, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo can provide cover in this area if needed, but they are more comfortable on the flanks.
Zirkzee has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League since joining from Bologna a couple of years ago, while Sesko has had numerous fitness problems in recent months.
Therefore, United could do with signing a new striker next year. Matanovic is a 6ft 5in tall right-footed striker and possesses high potential.
So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Man Utd should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Old Trafford club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in January or next summer.
Meanwhile, United are set to resume their Premier League campaign…
