Having previously called for the Terence Crawford fight himself, Teofimo Lopez now believes that ‘Bud’ is only interested in facing a fellow unbeaten legend.
The 38-year-old called time on his Hall of Fame-worthy career last December, having become a three-division undisputed king by dethroning Canelo Alvarez at 168lbs.
In order to do so, Crawford moved up two weight divisions and, despite contending with an obvious size disadvantage, he managed to score a convincing unanimous decision victory.
Feeling as though he had nothing left to prove, and indeed having been handsomely rewarded for his efforts, the American then announced his retirement a few months later.
Subsequently, though, he has been repeatedly linked to a comeback fight against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, who became a two-division unified champion by dethroning Xander Zayas in June.
Whether their fight actually materialises, only time will tell, but Lopez and many others remain unconvinced that Crawford has any desire to face Ennis.
Rather, the three-weight world champion has told Ring Champs that, in his mind, the only way Crawford comes out of retirement is for a clash with Floyd Mayweather.
“The only way he will come back is for him and Floyd.”
As two unbeaten, former five-division world champions, there is certainly some value in debating who would have won a prime-for-prime battle between the pair.
At this moment in time, however, Mayweather is 49 years old and, despite talk of a Manny Pacquiao rematch, has not fought professionally since his 10th-round stoppage of Conor McGregor in 2017.
Even then, it was little more than a glorified exhibition match and Crawford, meanwhile, has only been retired for less than a year.
