Chelsea have reached the stage where words matter less than decisions. On Enzo Fernandez, the decision appears clear, for now. Xabi Alonso has shut down the noise around the midfielder’s future and made it plain that Chelsea are planning with him, not without him.
There had been room for a sale earlier in the summer. Fernandez’s camp had an understanding with Chelsea in late May that a move could happen for £120m, with 14 August set as the deadline for serious bids. That date came and went. No formal offer arrived. Chelsea’s message since then has been direct, Fernandez is staying in this window.

Alonso did not leave much space for interpretation ahead of Monday’s Premier League trip to Fulham. Asked whether Fernandez would remain at Stamford Bridge after the window closes on 1 September, he said: “Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday.”
That is the club line, and for the moment it is the only line that matters. Alonso also added that the Argentina international has “integrated really well” since returning after the World Cup and is “training really well”. He went further, saying: “I see him with a really good attitude and that’s what we want.”

Manchester City interest remains in background
Manchester City have been keen. Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Fernandez at Chelsea and now manages City, is understood to admire him. City are rebuilding their midfield after Rodri agreed a move to Barcelona and Bernardo Silva left at the end of his contract. Fernandez has been one of the names under consideration, alongside Ayyoub Bouaddi in a proposed £85m deal.
That explains why the market noise has not gone away. It does not mean Chelsea are obliged to act on it. Clubs can be interested. They still have to pay. If Chelsea wanted £120m and nobody met it by the deadline, then the situation changes. Simple.
