WHO WORE 27 BEFORE WEGHORST?
Wout becomes only the second United striker to wear the no.27 for the Reds, after Federico Macheda’s stint in the first team between 2009 and 2014. Brazilian defender Alex Telles occupied the number from his arrival in 2020 until the start of this season, when he joined Sevilla on loan.
Club legend Gary Neville was United’s first-ever no.27 after squad numbers were introduced, wearing it between 1992 and 1994. The right-back then took on the traditional shirt for his position, no.2, in the following season, and he retained it for the rest of his decorated career.
Other players to have worn no.27 for the Reds include French defender Mikael Silvestre (1999/00 to 2007/08) and Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini (2015/16 to 2018/19). Terry Cooke is the only other United player to have had the number, wearing it for the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons.
