Not many people will notice the game between Wolves and Cardiff on the same day that Spurs host Arsenal in the North London Derby.
My main target each week is to provide the best possible EPL betting picks, though. And this is the match I like the most from a betting perspective.
This Wolves vs. Cardiff betting preview will provide a deep analysis of the state of both teams, and I’ll share my final predictions and pick at the end.
As you’ll see in my final betting pick, I feel that the odds are good enough to find value in one of the markets offered by the top soccer sportsbooks.
Wolves vs. Cardiff Betting Odds
As always, I will start with the betting odds that are available for the game between Wolverhampton and Cardiff City.
If we judge both teams by their current rankings, it’s obvious that the Wolves are much better. The side is playing well both at home and away, even putting up a fight against the strongest teams in the English Premier League.
But fellow newcomer Cardiff City is among the clubs that will most certainly battle against relegation until the very end of the EPL season. In my opinion, the Welsh side will go down eventually, simply because of the lack of quality in the squad.
Under such circumstances, the price for the Wolves to win is understandable. In fact, one could argue that it’s a bit high. I think that the loss against rock-bottom Huddersfield on Tuesday is the reason why the bookies are cautious with the odds.
It’s not like Cardiff is cruising recently. After a couple of good games, Neil Warnock and his boys lost two important home matches.
This is why I feel a bit tempted to go for Wolves to win here, but the under/over market is equally exciting. The away team is struggling to score, while the hosts have a good defense and are not exactly known for being too prolific, either.
I’m not sure which option is better, so let’s analyze both teams first.
Wolverhampton Team News and Analysis
Many people believed that the Wolverhampton Wanderers prepared well for life in the English Premier League, and this is obviously true. The team sits comfortably in the middle of the table and wasn’t involved in the fight against relegation at any given moment.
What is even more fascinating is that the Wolves are not only winning a lot of points, but they are also a team that sticks to a certain style of play. The manager, Nuno Santo, managed to teach his squad to keep the ball well and defend with discipline.
This has brought a lot of success to the Wolves, and the team was capable of playing well even against some of the best teams in the EPL.
There is one glaring problem, though, and this is their lack of goals.
In my opinion, this should be the big target for Nuno Santo and his boys for next season. If the Wolves are going to achieve something truly special in the EPL, they will have to find a way to score more goals.
A good example of the issue they have was the game against Huddersfield on Tuesday. The Wolves are much better, at least on paper, and they failed to muster a single shot on target against a team that will certainly play in the Championship next season.
There are some excuses, like the fact that Huddersfield’s defense is doing well at home, and the Wolves might be a bit complacent right now, but it’s still unacceptable.
The manager will certainly be furious, and the players will be eager to make it up to the fans in the game against Cardiff City. And let’s be honest, it’s a great opportunity to go back to winning ways.
The big problem I see is that the visitors will defend deep and put plenty of men behind the ball most of the time. Since the Wolves are struggling against defensive outlets, this might be an issue.
On the bright side, the home team is good at the back too and will face a rather tame opposition. Cardiff City is not exactly scoring for fun, so a clean sheet for the Wolves is on the cards here.
Another reason to believe that the hosts are in a good position is their lack of missing players.
Cardiff City Team News and Analysis
Cardiff City deserves nothing but respect for their performance in the season so far. Although the team is clearly underpowered for the English Premier League, it has been able to win points and is currently above the relegation zone.
The back-to-back wins against Bournemouth and Southampton gave the fans hope that the side can stay in the EPL. The problem is, they were followed by heavy defeats against Watford and Everton at home.
Both games were important, as playing against mid-table teams at home at this stage of the season is usually a good opportunity to win some points. And yet, Cardiff City showed some abysmal defending and conceded a total of 8 goals.
The team at least created some chances against Watford, but it failed to hit a single shot on target against Everton, which is a huge concern.
Since the defense of the team is not exactly bulletproof, either, there are too many problems across the pitch for Neil Warnock to solve. His squad lacks quality and is mostly relying on hard work.
This has worked on multiple occasion so far in the season, but there’s a lot more to do if Cardiff is going to stay in the EPL.
The good news is that the team has no notable injuries or suspensions, so Neil Warnock can rely on his best players.
Wolves vs. Cardiff Predictions and Betting Pick
The way I see it, there are two options here. The first one would be to back the Wolves to win. They are the stronger team, they play at home, and they will be motivated to bounce back after losing against Huddersfield.
The price of 1.51 for that to happen might seem low, but it actually contains some positive value, if you ask me.
But I see a better option out there. Both teams are struggling hard to score goals, and I don’t see a reason for that to change dramatically. Wolves will try to keep possession of the ball and control the tempo for most of the game.
At the same time, Cardiff City will be happy to sit back and deny their opponent any space. Under these circumstances, I have no choice but to back the under 2.5 goals option. BetOnline offers a price of 1.84, and I feel this is fantastic, so this is my final Wolves vs. Cardiff betting pick.
As for the correct score prediction, I believe that 1-0 or 2-0 for the hosts makes the most sense.
Most of my predictions on Cardiff games have been wrong so far during the season, but they have been for the match result betting market. I hope that the total goals option will bring me some luck this time around.
Do you agree with my pick, or do you see value elsewhere? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments below.
