Presque Isle Downs & Casino to Test-Launch Sportsbook on July 24
Presque Isle Downs & Casino in Erie is set to become the latest addition to Pennsylvania’s retail betting space as the property is preparing to conduct an obligatory two-day testing period of its wagering operations. The process will be overseen by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.
Presque Isle will hold a limited opening of its sportsbook on Wednesday, July 24 from 4 pm local time till midnight and on Thursday, July 25 from 2 pm till midnight.
If the state gambling regulator deems the testing period successful, the betting facility will be able to open doors permanently on Friday, July 26 at noon.
Presque Isle received the green light to conduct retail betting from the PGCB back in February. However, unlike other Pennsylvania casinos which went live with sports gambling shortly after they secured regulatory approval, the Erie property took a little more time to build its betting facility.
Similarly to other casinos owned by Churchill Downs Inc., Presque Isle will operate a BetAmerica-branded sportsbook. Churchill Downs took over the Erie casino early this year. It purchased it from Nevada-based gaming and hospitality operator Eldorado Resorts in a $180 million deal.
Presque Isle plans to host a grand opening ceremony for its sportsbook at 4 pm on August 8, which is when the NFL pre-season games are set to kick off.
The BetAmerica Sportsbook
Presque Isle’s sportsbook occupies а 1,275-square-foot area at the casino, which previously featured slot machines. Those were relocated to other parts of the gambling venue. As mentioned earlier, the betting facility is set to operate under the BetAmerica brand. It is also important to note that sports betting technology at the sportsbook will be powered by European provider SBTech.
Aside from the wagering facility, Presque Isle is also set to feature 50 self-betting kiosks, with half of those being located inside the actual sportsbook. The other half has been installed in other areas of the gaming floor.
The sports betting facility will be smoke-free. There are sports-betting kiosks located at the casino’s Center Bar and Bar 90 for the smoking portion of Presque Isle’s bettors.
The property has also previously revealed plans for online and mobile betting, but those will become available at a later stage. Presque Isle is adding retail betting as Pennsylvania’s gambling industry has hit its latest milestone – the recent start of regulated online casino gambling. Three casinos went live with their digital operations last week and more are to launch their own online casinos at a later stage.
Commenting of their upcoming launch of their sportsbook, Presque Isle General Manager Kevin O’Sullivan said that he thinks “it’s probably gonna be the most exciting place to be, when you’re talking sports it’s going to be right here in this room.” Mr. O’Sullivan, who has a wealth of experience in the global gaming industry having previously held a position at Eldorado Resorts, was named General Manager of the property earlier this year.
