Savannah Guthrie’s recent health battles
Although fully recovered now, Guthrie had been absent from the Today show for three weeks across December and early January due to having to undergo vocal cord surgery.
Guthrie said that she was diagnosed with a hemorrhagic polyp — which she explained was a ‘ruptured blood vessel’ — and a vocal nodule or a ‘callus from overuse’.
To overcome the issue, she underwent microscopic laryngeal surgery to relieve her ‘beleaguered vocal cords.’
Mom-of-two Guthrie first spoke about her condition in late December, explaining on the show: ‘Some of you have noticed that my voice has been very scratchy and started to crack a little bit.
‘Well, I have found out what it is. I have vocal nodules and I also have a polyp.
‘It’s not a big, big deal, but I am going to have to have a surgery in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks, so this is my last day for a little while.’
Guthrie added that she was ‘really excited’ to have received her diagnosis after years of struggling to understand what was wrong.
She continued: ‘This has been going on for years, honestly, so to have a solution.’
Following the surgery, Guthrie had to stay silent for one week.
