Robert Sanchez is still Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper under Liam Rosenior, but according to Football Insider, that’s not expected to be the case for much longer. The 28-year-old Spaniard is quickly losing the faith of the manager, as well as the club hierarchy, especially after his very poor performance in the 3-0 loss to Everton in the Premier League.
Chelsea are therefore looking to upgrade on their current options for the position between the posts. One possibility is to sign a new No.1, and on that front, they’re considering Sunderland’s Robin Roefs, whose quality and form this season is one of the main reasons why the Black Cats sit comfortably in the middle of the Premier League table.
Another option would be to promote from within and save money for other signings, and here they’re looking at the possibility of 20-year-old Mike Penders taking over from Sanchez when his loan with Strasbourg expires at the end of the season. Much like Roefs at Sunderland, Pender has been a standout performer for the Ligue 1 side, and Rosenior knows him well from their time together there.
