When a “Done Deal” Isn’t Really Done

In Premier League transfer windows, few phrases are more dangerous than “almost agreed”. Until a contract is signed, a medical is complete and the club announcement is live, every deal remains vulnerable.

A transfer hijack happens when one club appears to be leading the race for a player, only for another club to enter late, offer a better package, convince the player, or exploit a delay in negotiations. Sometimes it is about money. Sometimes it is about Champions League football. Sometimes it is about wages, agents, timing or simply a better sporting project.

The modern Premier League has become especially fertile ground for hijacks because clubs are richer, recruitment departments are faster, and player camps often keep multiple doors open until the final possible moment.

The Johan Manzambi Example: Villa Swoop on Newcastle’s Target

One of the freshest examples is Aston Villa’s move for Johan Manzambi. Newcastle United appeared to be in a strong position for the Freiburg and Switzerland midfielder, but Villa moved aggressively after his impressive World Cup and pushed themselves to the front of the queue.

This is a classic modern hijack. Newcastle had done much of the groundwork, but Villa could offer a more attractive blend: Champions League football, Unai Emery’s project, a growing European profile and a squad need created by Amadou Onana’s injury.

For the selling club, Villa’s arrival strengthened the market. For the player, it created a more compelling option. For Newcastle, it was the nightmare scenario: weeks of work undone because another Premier League club arrived late with equal or greater financial power and a stronger sporting pitch.
