France manager Didier Deschamps to MISS team’s next World Cup clash against Norway following heartbreaking personal tragedy

France manager Didier Deschamps is set to miss the team’s final group stage of the World Cup following a family tragedy.

Les Bleus, who sealed their spot in the knockout stage with a 3-0 win over Iraq on Monday night, are scheduled to face Norway and Erling Haaland on Friday in their final Group I clash.

However, Deschamps will not be on the touchline following the death of his mother, the French football federation announced on Tuesday.

The manager has left France’s World Cup camp in agreement with the French football federation to take compassionate leave.

The 57-year-old is expected to fly home to France for funeral preparations following the devastating news.

He will be absent from the upcoming training session ahead of the 2018 champions’ game against Norway and the game itself, which will take place at MetLife Stadium.

In his absence, Deschamps’ long-term assistant Guy Stephan will take charge of the national team.

‘The national team coach was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the passing of his mother,’ said the FFF in a statement.

‘In agreement with Philippe Diallo, President of the French Football Federation, who is present at the French national team’s training camp, Didier Deschamps has entrusted his assistant, Guy Stephan, with the responsibility of leading the squad until his return. During this extremely painful time, we ask for your utmost respect and restraint.’

France, considered one of the favorites to win the tournament, have already qualified for the Round of 32.

Kylian Mbappe and co. opened their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 thriller over Senegal, also in New York.

Meanwhile, Monday night’s 3-0 triumph over Iraq sealed their second victory of the tournament and their place in the knockout stage.
