Fernandes Interest Shows De Zerbi’s Intent
Tottenham’s summer is beginning to take shape around one clear idea, Roberto De Zerbi wants control. Not control in the passive sense, not sterile possession for possession’s sake, but midfielders who can receive under pressure, progress play and give Spurs a structure that has too often disappeared in difficult moments.

West Ham’s £80million valuation is steep, but understandable. Fernandes joined from Southampton for £38m in August 2025, has a contract until 2030 and, crucially, does not have a release clause. Southampton also hold a 15 per cent sell-on fee, which complicates the numbers further.

That is the measure of Fernandes’ rise. A player who began last season as a promising signing at West Ham now finds himself orbiting some of Europe’s most powerful clubs.
For Spurs, the attraction is obvious. After consecutive 17th-place finishes, this cannot be another summer of half-measures. Yves Bissouma has already left on a free transfer, leaving a gap in midfield and, more importantly, a need for a different kind of authority.
Fernandes offers legs, technique and growth potential. He is not the finished article, but Spurs are not buying certainty here. They would be buying trajectory.
