Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool exit has already become one of the defining transfer stories of the summer, and Chelsea have now been placed into the conversation in eye-catching fashion.
Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has urged the club to re-sign Salah on a free transfer once his Liverpool contract expires. It is a bold suggestion, given Salah’s extraordinary Anfield legacy and his limited first spell at Stamford Bridge.
Salah Transfer Claim Adds Intrigue
“Salah. Bring Mohamed Salah back,” Desailly told FootballTransfers when asked who new manager Xabi Alonso should sign during his first transfer window as Chelsea boss.
That quote carries weight because Chelsea know both sides of the Salah story. They saw the raw talent arrive in 2014, then watched him leave for Roma before becoming one of the Premier League’s greatest forwards at Liverpool.

“You know, he’s been there before and it didn’t work out. Maybe Salah wants a London club for his family, for a better quality of life. It’s not that Liverpool is unlivable, but London might be much better for them. I would say he is one of those experienced players who can bring that special element into the system.”
Chelsea Need Experience Around Alonso
Desailly’s argument is rooted in experience. Chelsea’s squad has been built around youthful potential, but Alonso’s arrival creates a demand for senior figures who understand elite pressure.
Salah, now 33, scored 257 goals in 442 games for Liverpool after leaving Chelsea. Those numbers are not nostalgia, they are evidence of elite output across almost a decade. Even after a difficult 2025-26 campaign, his intelligence, movement and big-match authority would still offer something Chelsea lack.
There is also a commercial and emotional dimension. A Salah return would generate enormous attention, while giving the player a chance to rewrite a brief and frustrating Stamford Bridge chapter.
