A Close-up on the Premier League’s Most Inventive Midfields

The Premier League is all about the midfield right now. We’ve got some tremendous creative duos/trios playing for pretty much every single team at the moment, and it is a true joy to watch. In recent years, the Premier League has veered towards a more possession-style of play, and the midfield is at the heart of it. We’ll discuss some of the best duos/trios on this page, but there were so many more that could have been mentioned. However, if you’ve seen these players play, you’ll know why we chose them.

Martin Zubimendi & Declan Rice (Arsenal)

Arsenal are currently sitting top of the Premier League, and many betting odds Premier League suggest that the title is Arsenal’s to lose (and based on previous years, that might just happen). Whilethe whole team is responsible for Arsenal’s position, it is the dream pairing of Zubimendi and Rice that is making the whole thing work.

You’ve got Rice driving himself forward. He is the one making the chances for the attack (and the forwards have a lot of chances right now). Zubimendi is sitting much deeper back, and he is ensuring that the defence is properly protected.

One of the great things is that each of these players has a very clear role, and they perform it to perfection. Ask anybody who is watching the Premier League right now, and they’ll tell you that Zubimendi and Rice are operating in sync. It is, by far, the best pairing.

Caicedo & Fernandez (Chelsea)

Caicedo and Fernandez are a completely different kettle of fish. They are both box-to-box midfielders, and they are brilliant with their tackles and forward momentum. When the two of them are playing together, other teams struggle to get the ball through Chelsea’s midfield.

Caicedo has benefited heavily from his previous time at Brighton, which was one of the first teams in the league to properly focus on the very possession-heavy play. This means that Caicedo knows exactly what to do. While he is great at getting the ball forward when needed, he isn’t afraid to play it safe in the midfield and keep possession, allowing the rest of his teammates to surge forward. He has been responsible for a few goals here.
