The Numbers Suggest Manchester United Simply Do Not Run Enough

There are many ways to explain Manchester United’s poor start to the season. Questions have been asked about the tactics, manager, recruitment, confidence levels and quality of the squad. However, the physical data points towards another fundamental problem: Man United are not covering enough ground or playing with sufficient intensity.

Running statistics should never be treated as a perfect measurement of effort. A team that controls possession may naturally cover less distance than one that spends 90 minutes chasing the ball. Nevertheless, when low running numbers are combined with poor performances and results, they become increasingly difficult to dismiss.

United are close to the bottom for distance covered

Across their opening six Premier League matches of 2026/27, Manchester United covered a combined 671.5 kilometres. That ranked them 16th among the division’s 20 teams. Their average of approximately 111.9 kilometres per game left them well behind the competition’s hardest-working sides.

The difference might not look enormous when expressed over a single match, but it accumulates quickly. If another team covers four kilometres more during a game, that is effectively an additional 400 metres for every outfield player. Those extra movements can translate into more pressure on the ball, more recovery runs, additional passing options and better defensive coverage.

Man United’s performance against Fulham provided a particularly striking example. The Fulham players covered 116.7 kilometres, while United managed 110.2 kilometres. That was a gap of 6.5 kilometres over the course of the match.

In practical terms, United were collectively more than 70 metres behind Fulham for every minute of normal time. That does not prove every United player lacked effort, but it illustrates how quickly small individual differences can become a major collective disadvantage.

The intensity figures are even more concerning

Total distance only tells part of the story. A player can build up kilometres by jogging into position without completing the explosive actions that disrupt an opponent.

That makes Man United’s high-intensity numbers…
