Michael Carrick will still lead Manchester United into this weekend’s Premier League trip to Chelsea, despite a run that has left very little room for excuses. According to Standard Sport, United have decided against making an immediate change, even after a sequence that has seen them go winless in their last eight matches.
That matters because the expectation had already hardened. Carrick “was widely expected to be fired after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth”, yet the club have kept him in place and, for now, they are sticking with the idea that this can still be repaired on the pitch. Standard Sport reports that he “will be in the away dugout as United visit Stamford Bridge this weekend”, with the hierarchy willing to give both manager and players one more chance to change the mood.
This is not a sign of confidence so much as a delay in judgement. Carrick held “crisis talks” with Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada at Carrington on Monday. Those discussions were “intended to clear up United’s immediate future”, and the answer appears to be short-term survival rather than long-term certainty. In plain terms, he has kept the job, but nobody should mistake that for a full endorsement.

There are deeper issues here. The report says there is “a general acceptance among supporters that Carrick has been let down by a subpar transfer window”, with heavy spending on three midfielders while obvious weaknesses elsewhere went untouched. That is poor planning, plain and simple. Add in “clear unrest among some of his players”, with Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez publicly criticising the club’s direction, and this starts to look like a structural problem as much as a coaching one.
