Tottenham Hotspur picked up their first victory of the Premier League campaign following a 3-1 win over Coventry City at home on Monday evening.
Spurs opened the scoring through a brilliant James Maddison strike from the edge of the box, but Coventry struck back with an equaliser shortly after the half-time break.
This did not dampen Spurs’ spirits and it took only nine more minutes for summer signing Omar Marmoush to put them ahead with another fantastic long-range strike.
Tottenham put the result beyond doubt with Ben Davies’ goal in stoppage-time. Goalkeeper Carl Rushworth was not at his best for Coventry, but Spurs still deserved the win.
Maddison earned the plaudits, having scored a brilliant goal in his first league start in almost 18 months, but there were several other standout performers in the match.
Midfielder Sandro Tonali was fantastic in the 1-1 draw at Manchester United this month, and he replicated the performance with another sublime showing yesterday.
The 26-year-old did not register an assist this time around but was exceptional with his distribution overall with an accuracy of 94%, as per Fotmob’s statistics.
The former Newcastle United man also won 6 duels alongside 2 tackles. He managed 7 ball recoveries in the game, while also making 4 clearances in the process.
The summer signing has grown into his role at Spurs as the season has progressed. He has definitely become a leader in the centre of the park and looks indispensable.
Shortly after the 3-1 triumph, Tonali celebrated the victory with the fans on Instagram with the caption: ‘Believe in the process’.
He was praised by several Spurs stars including Tosin Adarabioyo, who commented: ‘What a player’.
Tonali has delivered fantastic performances against United and Coventry since the international break, and needs to repeat the feat when Spurs visit London rivals Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend.
The Blues have had the clear-cut advantage over Spurs in recent times with 6 straight league wins, and Roberto De Zerbi’s side face a stern challenge at Stamford Bridge in Saturday’s much-anticipated derby.
De Zerbi found success with a 3-4-2-1…
