The Premier League’s Best Value Signings of the Past Decade

Premier League clubs have spent enormous sums over the past decade, but price and value are not the same thing. Some expensive arrivals have justified every penny, while less celebrated deals have transformed teams, delivered trophies and generated huge resale potential.

Assessing value requires more than simply finding the lowest transfer fee. Longevity, consistency, tactical importance and the level of success achieved must all be considered. A £50 million player can still represent exceptional value if they become one of the best in the world, while a £10 million signing may fall short if their impact is brief.

Looking at transfers completed from the summer of 2016 onwards, these signings stand out as some of the Premier League’s best business.

Mohamed Salah: Roma to Liverpool, £36.9 Million

Few Premier League transfers have delivered a better combination of goals, longevity and trophies than Mohamed Salah’s move to Liverpool in 2017.

There were doubts when Liverpool brought Salah back to England. His earlier spell at Chelsea had produced only two league goals, and the initial reaction was that Liverpool had committed a substantial fee to a player still carrying questions about his suitability for the competition.

Those concerns disappeared almost immediately. Salah scored 32 league goals in his first season, setting a record for a 38-match Premier League campaign at the time. He also collected the first of his multiple Golden Boot awards and established himself as one of Europe’s leading forwards.

His value goes far beyond individual numbers. Salah became the most reliable scorer in a Liverpool team that won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup. His movement from the right helped define the structure of Jürgen Klopp’s attack, while his availability allowed Liverpool to build around him year after year.

In a market where proven goalscorers regularly command fees approaching or exceeding £100 million, paying less than £40 million for Salah was extraordinary business.
