Liverpool continued their 100% start to the Champions League midweek, courtesy of a 6-3 win away from home against Austrian outfit LASK. It is, until this point, the most successful scoreline in Andoni Iraola’s time at the club.
Despite scoring six, there was some pessimism following the game as the opposition scored three relatively comfortable goals. That said, Liverpool’s midfield was bypassed easily and therefore, concerns were again raised about its depth and quality.
According to TEAMtalk, the Reds are planning on revamping their engine room and will be in the transfer market in the January transfer window having identified AS Roma star Manu Kone as a potential signing during the winter.
Originally, they had been keen on signing Alex Scott but Chelsea are believed to be leading Liverpool for the Bournemouth star but Kone has emerged as an option after Roma’s strong start to the season. The 25-year-old is valued at £86 million.
Kone worth the price tag for Liverpool
Considering Alexis Mac Allister’s future at Liverpool is doubtful, they need to invest in a midfielder or two. Manu Kone’s signing from AS Roma promises to be an excellent investment for the Reds in spite of the player’s £86 million price tag.
Kone is exceptional in tight spaces, dictates tempo well in midfield and has a strong physical prowess to resist pressure. Defensively, he can win aerial and ground duels, works hard to close spaces down, and makes accurate tackles.
The French international was also on Chelsea’s radar but with Alex Scott now emerging as their priority, Liverpool could have a fairly straightforward part towards securing his signing if indeed they plan on materialising their interest in him in January.
Manu Kone, however, remains a very crucial player for AS Roma, who are challenging for Serie A this year. Therefore, it remains to be seen if Gian Piero Gasperini is prepared to let such a vital first-team asset leave midway through the campaign.
