Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres finds himself playing a secondary role just a year after joining the club following a couple of phenomenal seasons with Sporting Lisbon, with Kai Havertz emerging as Mikel Arteta’s preferred choice at number nine.
Gyokeres has lacked the cutting edge and efficiency up top to be successful in the Premier League, as doubts have already started to emerge over his continuity at the Emirates Stadium. It is now believed that the Gunners could bring in another striker.
Spanish source Diario Sport has reported that Arsenal are still keen on signing Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid and could reignite interest in the Argentine international’s services in 2027 as they hope to finally secure his services.
While the Gunners were keen on signing him earlier this summer as well, Alvarez’s firm inclination was towards joining Barcelona. After Atletico Madrid refused to sell him to their La Liga rivals, the 26-year-old stayed put in the Spanish capital.
Following a hostile reception from his own fanbase and a generally slow start to the campaign after skipping pre-season with Atletico, Sport has added that Alvarez’s valuation has now dropped to £101 million from over £125 million in the summer.
Alvarez investment comes with a massive risk
Julian Alvarez is a terrific player and as he eventually regains his form and fitness at Atletico Madrid, it is fair to think that he will be among the goals again. His finishing, intelligent movement in the final third and reading of the game make him lethal up top.
Undoubtedly, he would be an excellent signing for Arsenal on the pitch but after a very well-documented off-pitch situation surrounding his future at Atletico this summer, it would be wise for the Gunners to reconsider their interest in his services.
Barcelona are likely to come knocking on Alvarez’s door at some point in the near future and considering a transfer to the Catalan outfit was his primary objective earlier this year, the Argentine could only use Arsenal as a short-term stepping stone.
Though Arsenal might financially profit from such a transaction, it is debatable whether they want to risk…
