Barcelona were reportedly keen on an ambitious transfer move for Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol during the summer.
The Croatia international has been a key player for Man City, so they were understandably keen not to sell, and he ended up staying at the Etihad Stadium.
We reported on Barca being one of Gvardiol’s suitors a few months ago, and it seems this interest has now been confirmed in a report from Mundo Deportivo.
They state that City were not prepared to let an important player like Gvardiol go, but one imagines Barcelona’s interest could become significant again in the wake of City being found guilty of so many major Premier League financial breaches.
Could Josko Gvardiol and other stars leave Manchester City?
Gvardiol is a top player and he’ll surely be one of a number of City stars wondering what the future holds at the moment after last week’s verdict.
The 24-year-old joined City from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 and he’s shown his quality since then as he’s played a big part in the club’s success on the pitch.
Still, it’s not out of the question that City are soon handed a huge points deduction or perhaps even expulsion from the Premier League, so it’s hard to see big names like Gvardiol sticking around in that kind of situation.
This has already led to speculation about other MCFC players like Erling Haaland, who is apparently being monitored by Real Madrid and Barcelona, according to the Sun.
Barcelona to make changes at left-back?
Gvardiol can play centre-back or left-back, but one imagines it’s the latter role that he’d be used in at Barca.
Alejandro Balde could be on his way out of the Nou Camp after falling out of favour, and Gvardiol makes sense as an ideal replacement.
