Alexander Isak proved the difference as Liverpool secured a hard fought 1-0 victory over AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, giving Andoni Iraola three valuable Premier League points on his return to his former club.
Liverpool were some distance from their fluent best, particularly in an awkward first half, but Isak’s 57th minute finish and an excellent defensive performance ensured the visitors headed into the international break with a victory.
It was also Liverpool’s third consecutive Premier League clean sheet, with Alisson Becker and Jeremy Jacquet particularly impressive.
Bournemouth frustrate Liverpool
Iraola received a warm reception from the Bournemouth supporters following his successful spell on the south coast, but his former players made life difficult once the match began.
Bournemouth were aggressive in midfield, with Tyler Adams and Alex Scott competing well against Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Liverpool struggled to establish control and Florian Wirtz endured another difficult afternoon.
The hosts produced the clearest early opportunity when Evanilson’s clever flick in the 18th minute forced Alisson into an important save.
Liverpool did threaten occasionally. Bradley Barcola forced Djordje Petrovic into a save with his legs, while Szoboszlai’s dipping free kick from 25 yards drifted narrowly wide.
Wirtz also fired over from close range and was initially flagged offside, although replays showed the German had timed his run correctly.
Half time arrived with the game goalless and Liverpool searching for greater urgency.
Isak gives Liverpool breakthrough
The decisive moment arrived 12 minutes after the restart.
Cody Gakpo drove towards the Bournemouth penalty area and delivered into the box. The home defence failed to deal with the danger and Isak reacted sharply, finishing from close range.
It was the Swedish striker’s fourth Premier League goal of the season.
