Brighton star could be set for January exit

Brighton are confronting a situation they would have hoped to avoid, with growing uncertainty around the TeamTalk report on Kaoru Mitoma’s future suggesting the club may be heading towards a painful decision point. Contract talks have stalled, confidence over an agreement appears to have faded, and the possibility of an exit in the January window is now firmly in view.

Mitoma remains under contract until 30 June 2027, after signing a four-year extension in October 2023. At the time, it felt like another smart piece of Brighton planning. The winger had become one of the club’s most watchable attacking players, and his wages of around £80,000 a week reflected both importance and expectation. Now, with the next stage of negotiations proving difficult, Brighton risk losing control of a key asset.

Fabian Hurzeler struck a positive note in March when discussing the situation. “Still in talks but also focusing on the things that are very important for the club, and I think that’s also the perspective from the player,” Hurzeler said. He added, “He wants to give his best for Brighton because he’s fully committed; you can see it in every training session, you can see it in every performance that he gives his best, so therefore that’s the main focus.”

Those comments offered reassurance at the time, but the landscape has changed. According to the report, “meaningful progress has since stalled”, with Mitoma now “reluctant to commit further because of the level of interest in him”. That is the line that will concern Brighton most. Once a player reaches that point, timing becomes everything, and leverage can shift quickly.
