Carragher believes Chelsea challenge comes too soon
Jamie Carragher and Daniel Sturridge offered contrasting assessments of Chelsea’s Premier League title prospects as they examined the early work of manager Xabi Alonso.
Speaking during Sky Sports’ post-match coverage, the original source of the discussion, Carragher acknowledged that Chelsea had performed better than he expected against Arsenal. However, he maintained that Alonso’s developing side are not yet ready to sustain a championship challenge.
“I think it is too soon,” Carragher said. “We’re talking about Chelsea, not so much as challengers, but maybe being the closest team to Arsenal.”
That distinction captures the uncertainty surrounding Chelsea. They possess enough attacking talent to defeat most Premier League opponents, while the absence of European football gives Alonso additional time to coach his players and manage their fitness.
Yet finishing as Arsenal’s closest rival would not necessarily mean pushing the champions until the final weeks of the season. Carragher believes Chelsea should be considered strong candidates for Champions League qualification, but regards a genuine title challenge as a more demanding proposition.
For Alonso, the task involves delivering immediate results while introducing a new tactical identity. Chelsea’s history offers little patience to managers requesting time, even when the squad is undergoing substantial change.
“Chelsea notoriously has always been a club built around you have to win now,” Carragher said. “It’s not about a project. It’s not about the process.”
Sturridge trusts attacking quality under Alonso
Sturridge was more optimistic about what Chelsea could achieve this season. The former Blues striker accepted that a title challenge might be arriving earlier than expected, but believes the quality within Alonso’s squad makes it possible.
