Aston Villa still in the race to hijack huge move for Serie A forward

Aston Villa are actively exploring a deal for Rafael Leao, with fresh contact on Wednesday keeping them firmly in the conversation for one of the most eye-catching attacking moves of the window. According to TeamTalk, Villa have continued discussions with the AC Milan forward as Unai Emery looks to add another elite option in the final third.

The situation remains finely balanced. Galatasaray have already advanced their pursuit and are understood to have an agreement in place with Milan worth around €45million, which is approximately £38.6m, while also putting forward a contract worth around €12million per season, about £10.3m. That would be, as reported, a “double-your-money offer” for the Portugal international.

Yet Villa are still there, still pushing, and crucially, still in the player’s thinking. Sources cited in the report say Leao is “intrigued” by the prospect of the move to Villa Park, a detail that explains why the Turkish side have not yet been able to close the operation.

Rafael Leao weighing Premier League chance

Leao’s next step now appears to rest on a choice between financial power and sporting appeal. Galatasaray’s package is bigger, and by some distance. Villa’s proposal, by contrast, is said to be closer to his current AC Milan salary level. Even so, there is clear encouragement for Emery and the club hierarchy in the suggestion that “the prospect of playing in the Premier League is understood to appeal to Leao”.

That matters. It indicates this is not a speculative enquiry or background check. Villa have made their case and received enough encouragement to continue. The report adds that they have “made their interest clear and held fresh discussions with the player on Wednesday”, underlining a process that is live and developing.
