Man City ready to join the race for French midfielder

Manchester City’s summer has moved quickly, and the midfield overhaul now looks like the central story of their window. According to Daily Mail, City have “identified Roma’s Manu Kone as a potential signing for their revamped midfield after selling Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders.” That is the key line here, and it tells you plenty about where this squad is heading under Enzo Maresca.

Let’s start with the obvious. “Both midfielders departed this week for a combined total of around £110million”, which is serious money, but also serious disruption. Kone fits part of that brief. The 25-year-old has “spent the past two years in Serie A, scoring four goals in 63 appearances for Roma, but is more renowned for his dynamism and excels off the ball.” That reads like a player City believe can restore energy and defensive intensity in central areas. He is not a glamour signing, and that is often the point.

Roma are said to want “around £51m” for the France international, who “featured five times for France during the World Cup” and has 19 caps in total. There is also a market angle here. “Both Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with the former Borussia Monchengladbach man”, while United had already “spoken to his representatives”. City stepping in now would be practical and opportunistic.
