Liverpool handed injury boost ahead of Manchester City clash

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has given an update on the fitness of Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong ahead of their Premier League clash against Manchester City.

The Reds have been looking short at the back recently, with Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong all out injured for Slot’s men.

Liverpool did dip into the transfer market with a late swoop for promising center-back Jeremy Jacquet, but the player won’t be joining from Rennes until the end of the season.

Ibrahima Konate made an emotional return to the side against Newcastle after being given leave due to the passing of his father.

With Liverpool’s defence looking a bit more stable again, Arne Slot has been given another boost ahead of the City game.

Joe Gomez could feature against City

Joe Gomez is set to return to training ahead of Sunday’s clash, after picking up a knock in Liverpool’s recent defeat at Bournemouth.

Speaking in their press conference ahead of the game, Slot said: “With Joe [Gomez], we have a little bit of hope he might train tomorrow or Saturday, so not available to start but maybe available to help the team if needed during the game.”

The versatile defender can play anywhere along the backline and will be a welcome return for the Reds – especially with Slot being forced to play the likes of Waturo Endo and Ryan Gravenberch at the back recently.

Frimpong still out injured

Slot also gave an update on Frimpong during his press duties.

The Dutchman pulled up inside the first two minutes of Liverpool’s Champions League tie against Qarabag with a suspected groin injury.

However, with the Reds especially short on right-backs at the moment, Slot’s update on Frimpong was less positive.

“Jeremie [Frimpong] will definitely not train this week, so he’s not available for the weekend,” he said.

Should Liverpool have bought defensive cover?

Whilst the £60 million acquisition of Jacquet will be welcomed on Merseyside, question marks will…
