Chelsea are moving towards another deal, this time for Pep Chavarria, with David Ornstein of The Athletic reporting that the club are close to finalising an agreement with Rayo Vallecano for the left-back. The broad picture is simple. Chelsea needed cover, they identified a target, and now they are pushing to finish it.
The key detail is that the 28-year-old has already agreed personal terms. He is now expected to be allowed to complete a medical while the two clubs continue to work through the final stages. This move follows Marc Cucurella’s €60million move to Real Madrid in June, a sale that left Jorrel Hato as the only recognised left-back in Chelsea’s senior squad. Landon Emenalo, still only 18, has also been used there in pre-season, but that was never likely to be enough for a club trying to compete on multiple fronts.

Simon Johnson’s line that Chavarria was “the No 1 target” matters. So does the explanation that “This has been a long time coming and has always been a matter of when, not if.” Chelsea clearly knew what they wanted. The delay was about cost. “The issue was the fee, with Chelsea and Rayo Vallecano having different variations from the get-go. Chavarria is no novelty pick. He played a major role in Rayo’s run to last season’s Conference League final and completed the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in Leipzig. He has spent his entire career in Spanish football and has made 125 appearances for Rayo since arriving from Real Zaragoza in 2022.
