The match is confirmed for 16 August, pitting Arsenal against Manchester City six days before the Premier League season opens on 22 August. That compressed window left no room to rearrange the fixture around the concert dates, forcing organisers to find an alternative venue.
Cardiff’s History With The Shield
The Principality Stadium, still known as the Millennium Stadium during its previous run as host, staged the Community Shield every year from 2001 to 2006 while Wembley was being rebuilt. Attendances regularly ran between 58,000 and 70,000, with the 2004 edition drawing 70,384 fans.
Cardiff has a strong track record with this fixture, so the precedent here is not a concerning one.

Since the new Wembley opened in 2007, the Shield has only moved twice before now. It went to Villa Park in 2012 for the London Olympics football schedule, then to Leicester’s King Power Stadium in 2022 when Wembley hosted the Women’s Euro final.
The Cost Of Moving The Shield
There is a financial sting to this switch. The Principality Stadium holds just over 74,000, roughly 16,000 fewer seats than Wembley’s capacity of 90,000. That gap means lost ticketing and hospitality revenue on a fixture that still generates meaningful income as the season’s curtain-raiser.
The scheduling squeeze adds another layer. With the Premier League kicking off just six days after the Shield, both clubs are already working through a shortened pre-season. Adding a trip to Cardiff on top of that has not gone unnoticed by supporters.
